About the Author

Robert Ziomkowski, Ph.D., received a postdoctoral degree at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies, Toronto, in 2002. He earned his doctorate in History from Cornell University in 2000.Dr. Ziomkowski’s teaching repertoire includes courses in western civilization, medieval history, ancient history, science in the western tradition, Islamic civilization and Latin, as well as seminars on witchcraft and heresy, the soul in medieval culture, and paleography. His current research focuses on the medieval reception of ancient Greek science, especially as seen in commentaries on the creation narratives in the Book of Genesis and Plato’s Timaeus.In 2003 he curated an exhibition of Cornell University’s medieval manuscripts and published an online version, From Manuscript to Print: The Evolution of the Medieval Book (http://rmc. library.cornell.edu/medievalbook/). I just passed this CLEP exam today with a score of 65! This book is a thorough overview, containing about 170 pages of content, 2 practice tests, in-depth answer keys with explanations, and a comprehensive glossary. Be forewarned: it takes longer than you would think to get through. In my experience, I could not have absorbed this book's content and passed this exam with a mere "skimming over." This exam is HARD, and you will need much more than a just general idea of history and a little common sense. By the time of the exam, you should be pretty comfortable with over two thousand years of history, which is no simple undertaking. Still, it's totally doable.Here was my method of attack: I studied intensely (5-7 hours/day) for about a week, using this book as my primary resource. By the time I finished this book, it was in pretty bad shape (highlighting, underlining, filling in the margins with notes of key terms, etc.). After I marked it up, I read everything one more time. As much as I detested it, I had to stay glued to this book, as every minute detail can be significant. After that, I supplemented with some (very light) external research. I looked up maps of the various empires/Germanic tribes/major bodies of water, found photos of famous buildings and artwork mentioned in the text, and read a few forums that pointed out other important topics to study.My only complaint is that there are no pictures or maps in the actual "textbook" portion of the book, even though a few are sprinkled here and there in the practice exams at the end. And, yes, the CLEP itself does contain multiple questions that involve maps and artwork. I really wish this book had embedded photos and maps that correspond with each section into the text itself. If you use this book, you will absolutely want to look up as many external images as possible. The CLEP even contained a couple photos of artwork never mentioned in the text. Basically, I'd recommend familiarizing yourself with the maps, architecture, and artwork of each era. But if you don't, it likely won't kill your score either. I'd say there were no more than 10 questions with such images attached to them.With all of that said, one week of simply reading a book through twice and then scoring 15 points higher than I needed?! I'll definitely take it.

Passed another test with this as my only source. Read it, do the online practice tests until you can make 90% or better, take the real test. So far I am 5 for 5 using just these study guides. If you are a decent test taker, this should be sufficient. Read the explanations on the practice tests. Beats paying for a full class and textbooks while also consuming 4 months of your time. There is bleed-over in these subjects as evidence in the books. Western I and Western II intertwine. US History I, US History II, US Government, and Western II intertwine. If you take one, take the other(s). So take all 5 of these tests consecutively! I went US History I and II, Government, Western II, then Western I.

This is a very hard test. I barely passed. I used this book almost exclusively along with quizlet and individual research. I scored both practice tests in this book with 100% but don’t expect these questions to be on the real test. There are questions about material I never remember from any of my studies. It helps to get a basic idea but you’ll need more than this book and a whole lot of luck.

These helped me pass 2 cleps in 2 weeks. West Civ 1 & 2 I would have had no chance without them. the online practice tests were invaluable in getting me to where I needed to be. I suggest taking all 3 practice test checking your answers both right and wrong so you know why you were right and retaking all of them at least a second time. one of my copies had the code revealed but it worked for me anyway if your online code does not work you can purchase access for 14.99 and I would suggest that you do that.

Third time's a charm... I didn't find this book all that helpful on its own. If you do use it, be sure to also supplement with You Tube videos of John Green and other resources. This is the toughest test I've taken yet and it's hard to know what they'll focus on. Best to cover all your bases.

I read this book as my primary resource and did a good deal of preparation for the test. I missed the passing score by 2 points. I've successfully tested out of Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Marketing, Management and Business Law. I also have a strong GPA and generally test really well. While the test was certainly challenging, I really didn't feel like this book did too great of a job in preparing me overall. I found myself reviewing a great deal of material that was not on my test while I was scratching my head at plenty of questions that I didn't recall being covered. The photos identifying various types of art and architecture weren't useful at all and the maps weren't even close to what I encountered on the test.Additionally, I found numerous typos and that just strikes me as sloppy and unprofessional. Chapter summaries, better organization, better proofreading, a glossary and more relevant graphics would have been helpful.

I bought this for my son to prepare for the CLEP exam. He said the actual CLEP exam was much harder than the online practice tests that come with this book. He used this book as his primary means of preparing for the test but he also looked over a Western Civ textbook and various encyclopedia articles. He's always been interested in history so he had lot of background knowledge to begin with. He passed with a score of 63.
