The Drawing Lesson: A Graphic Novel That Teaches You How to Draw, by Mark Crilley

From School Library Journal

Gr 4 Up—David is awed by an older student who can draw cars, and he wants to be able to do the same. When he asks Becky, an artist drawing in the park, for a quick lesson, the small request turns into an entire summer of progressive tutorials that readers are encouraged to emulate and practice. What could have been a series of instructions enhanced with dialogue and humor instead features a full story that's heartfelt and quite moving. The book contains illustrations rendered in shaded, sepia-tone pencil overlaid with crisp, computer-created dialogue balloons, and as Becky talks about framing and realism, negative space, and lighting, readers start to notice the intriguing choices Crilley has made in his storytelling. The focus is on drawing, not graphic narrative, but as readers see and analyze the way Becky—and, by extension, Crilley—is encouraging them, the balance between cartooning and realism begins to leap out. The dynamic between David's impetuous enthusiasm and Becky's caustic reserve pays off in a way that might be surprising, considering Crilley's frequent use of caricature. This title supports rereading and careful examination of the author's impeccable technique and the implied storytelling lessons he doesn't make explicit. VERDICT An artful balance of character and technique, of observed human moments and carefully pitched instruction, that will appeal to students with artistic aspirations.—Benjamin Russell, Belmont High School, NH

I've never heard of Mark Crilley before, never read any of his books, and I have a feeling I'm not his usual target demographic (since he's well-known for his manga books and I'm not a manga fan), but wow, this was a wonderful book. Its purpose, according to the book's notes, is to allow you to experience what it's like to have a mentor--someone who will not only teach you how to draw, but interact with you, point out what you're doing wrong, and to encourage you (but not coddle you). This book delivers that, in an abbreviated form. The story is of a boy, David, who meets a woman in the park who is drawing. He begs her to teach him, and she does, for a few hours. But of course, the lesson doesn't end there! Each chapter shows how David and his mentor meet up, and each chapter shows her teaching him a new drawing principle. First, it's getting the outline of the drawing accurate. There's a chapter on shading. Then there's the one about using your pencil strokes to follow along the form. (I enjoyed that one. Finally, a beginner drawing book that doesn't rely on smearing the graphite! Eureka! Glory be!) Negative space is covered, composition--it's a really good book!I'd recommend it to anyone, of any age. I wouldn't assume that it would be the only drawing book that would ever be needed. It can't possibly cover everything. But it does offer a good start, plus it teaches some truths that beginner artists need to learn, but are things that are often beyond the scope of regular beginner drawing books. Things like wanting to draw for its own sake (not to compete with someone else), and to accept criticism and keep on moving forward. This is a wonderful book and beautifully presented. I think it would be a big hit with anyone, but particularly those under age 18, especially if they've just discovered drawing.

Well, I pre-ordered this book and it arrived yesterday. I think if Mr Crilley met me he would be VERY surprised to find an older beginner artist bought this book! This book is amazing, and it's a whole teaching manual, with a story line that's interesting ! I highly recommend this book to new and intermediate artists..... You will love it! Thanks Mark Crilley !

TLDR; highly recommend for kids or any beginner who is interested in drawing better. Entertaining story and art, and excellent instruction. This is the book that I wish I had had when I was 6 (or 10, or 13).I got this for my niece and nephew, the former of whom likes to draw, and the latter hopefully will develop the habit as he grows a little older. Being that I live thousands of miles from them, I cannot easily teach them what I've learned about drawing, sit with them and practice, or encourage them to keep at it; so I decided this would be a fair substitute. That said, what kind of uncle would I be if I didn't look though it first, to ensure that the quality and lessons were worth it.Well, worth it they are! This little book surprised me in several ways. First of all, the story and pictures are delightful, and could be enjoyed without the lessons. Actually the lessons almost feel secondary, they weave so well with the narrative that you'd almost forget that there was a lesson there at all, except that at the end of each chapter there is a prompt on what to practice. I was worried that the "story" would be just a cheap gimmick, and that it would otherwise be just a another "how-to-draw" book, but the story really stands up on it's own. A synopsis can be ready elsewhere, so I won't get into what the story is about.Second: the lessons are good. Really really good, not pedantic, formulaic or "kids stuff", but lessons on real fundamentals, and things that aspiring artist will not necessarily pick up just from practicing. One of the big ones is that it encourages the types of practice which really will cause kids to improve, and yet remain versatile enough to tackle whichever style they chose to emulate, or to develop their own.The third thing which really impressed me is that it's very much NOT a how-to-draw X book and not the least bit stifling. It's doesn't demonstrate how to draw a specific thing, step-by-step, but teaches basic techniques for seeing and interpreting, for composition, shading, proportion, etc. such that kids will learn how to draw whatever they see, and whatever they want to draw, not just what a step-by-step how-to book taught them to draw. Now, many kids really do enjoy those how-to methods, and I'm not necessarily saying they should be avoided, but this is much more useful an approach than those are and of a more lasting benefit. Get this and how-to books, fine, but don't skip on getting this. The fourth thing, and perhaps a bit personal to me, is that I never had a chance to get any good art instruction when I was young, and this is the book that I now wish that I had had then. Any beginner with this book has a huge head start (I really can't overstate that), particularly if they aren't going to be getting any professional instruction. This book is one part excellent lessons, one part interesting art and story and one part mentor. There are many great books on drawing, or art in general, but this one could have been the only one that I needed from about the 3rd grade through at least my early teenage years. And here is a bonus fifth surprise, which only came to me well after finishing the book and thinking about it in retrospect: The simply-drawn panels are actually something that could get young kinds inspired to do their own comics... or just share their drawings and stories in general; Some kids may not necessarily need all that much inspiration to do so, but they could easily tell their own stories in pictures and words, hold them up against Mr. Crilley's and be satisfied that they drew well enough to communicate their story to their readers. I dealt with a ton of self-doubt when I was young, about whether or not my art was good enough to show to others. I wrote and drew and then stuffed the work away and mostly hid it from others. Seeing a real book, with simple and expressive art in it, which did tell a story, which people read and liked and paid money for would have encouraged me thoroughly and would have put those doubts to rest forever. That's of incalculable worth to an aspiring artist.

Believe it or not, I could've been the first person to review this! But I wouldn't have gotten it in the mail and it would've been dishonest, so now that I've finished reading it, (a few minutes ago actually,) I'll share with the internet my thoughts on this masterpiece. The sketchy art style is superb. With it's cartoony characters and semi-realistic backgrounds, it's almost as if he's returned to his Akiko roots, while at the same time he makes it seem as if the world around the characters is a sketch itself. The thinly laced plot is solid as a rock and the characters are very believable. From the eager student David, (named after his real life art instructor, David Small,) to his art instructor Becky, who seems to teach him about drawing just to get him to stop bugging her.As a young student artist, it calls to mind MY drawing lessons I've had with my first art instructor a few years ago, (and him telling me to make my lines darker among other things.) I've had many of the same problems with my art as David does in this book, (and still do,) so that makes the young protagonist far more compelling to me than, say, Miki Yoshida from Miki Falls. Becky's drawing lessons are very practical and very similar to how my art instructor taught me, (though I don't remember him telling me about Negative Space,) and her instructions don't feel like she's talking down to you, unlike SOME instructional comics I've read.Ever since I picked up that copy of Mastering Manga over a Christopher Hart book so long ago, I feel like I've learned everything about drawing comics from this master of the comics medium, (and from my art instructor of course!) All in all, if this masterpiece doesn't win him his Eisner Award, (or at least fourteenth nomination,) I don't know what will!

This is the second of Ansel Adams' most read trilogy, and it is thorough, competent, informative and important as a celebration of the great years of silver-based photography. Even in the digital age there is a lot to learn from this, as what is important is the choice of paths, available within the technology, to achieve an ultimate goal. Change the technology and you change the pathways, but the paradigms that govern the choices remain the same. It should be read together with The Print by the same author.

I gave away my hardback copy of this classic years ago. I wanted to read again several parts of it so I just bought the Kindle edition. Big mistake. It is not formatted for Kindle at all -- just a very small photo copy of the original with no real Kindle features (as in eyestrain). Buy the paperback.

As an advanced amateur photographers, my feelings about this book are mixed. Majority of the concepts are dated (unless you are a film photographer) and readability issues. Mostly there won't be any continuity in reading the book because of the same.Zone system is the only reason why I bought this book and that is the key take away for digital photographers and who wants to plan to make their photos in future. Hands down, nobody else could explain it better than the master himself. I wish I am shooting film!!However, in today's world of mass propaganda (AKA YouTube) this book is a very good read and definitely provides a direction about general principles of how to think when you are about to take (possibly make one in future) picture and no go run acquiring all the gear in the world.

What a brilliant book. This is a masterpiece, by a master craftsman. While the details may have changed, the principles have not. These are timeless, and this is what he sets out to demonstrate again. The book is laid out in the most logical manner. The section on the Zone System is a must read for any photographer. His grasp of the subject is masterly, and so is his treatment of the subject.

This should be mandatory reading for anyone wishing to call themselves a photographer. Even if you have never or will never own a film camera, this book will give you practical advice that will make you a better photographer. It is this book in which Ansel describes in detail his famous "Zone System." Understanding this system has, without exaggeration, changed the way that I look at photography. If you buy only one photography book, make it this one!

Great read, Ansel Adams shares his wisdom and knowledge in the Negative, the second book in a three-part series. I also read the Camera, also very much worthwhile, and got me interested in film cameras (large format). I shoot digital and still found a LOT of value in Ansel's Negative. If you're more interested in digital photography and believe Photoshop can solve all your issues, then this definitely isn't the book for you. If you are even mildly interested in film, or want to better understand your camera and exposure, and/or want to learn about both the theory AND how to apply it to the real world, then this is a great book for you. I found value as a digital photographer in reading this book (learning about Zone system and how the camera "sees" the world and how it translates into a printed image), but you need to know how to "connect" the dots back to digital if you do. (I process RAW images in Lightroom / Photoshop and found it refreshing to "go back to basics" and see how the masters of film approached their craft). I've gotten inspired, and am saving up for a medium or large format film camera to take my craft to the next level after reading this book.

Still a classic on exposure even in the age of digital photography. In Adams' series, it is not so much the material and its relationship to available photography products that is important rather, the thought processes that brought about the Zone System.

A must read. The explanation of the zone system is outstanding. I had taken a number of skyline photographs of Austin which when reviewed by professional photographers got 2 thumbs up. After looking at them with a critical eye on exposure and armed with my new understanding of the zone - I retook those same pictures and WOW. What an amazing ability to move your camera off of matrixed metering and know how to really set the exposure for what you want to show. Also helps you understand the tradeoffs the camera is making in it's exposure settings so you can be more purposeful in changes you might make. A critical read if you also intend to ever move into large format photography.

If I were to review the subject of this memoir rather than the book itself, it would be a slam-dunk five star rating. As it is, I can still recommend Carmon’s brief but potent biography as the best that has been published about this fascinating, passionate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. I have no doubt many more will follow, and it’s possible I will read every one of them. As it stands, this is a rare instance in which I turned my back on my pile of free galleys long enough to ferret this gem out at the Seattle Public Library, because I just had to read it. You should too.I’m an old school feminist from the seventies, but Ginsberg is one from the fifties. How is that even possible? Imagine the courage it would take to step forward at a time when no women’s movement even existed! She sued Rutgers University for equal pay and won. Later, she was the first female law professor at Columbia University, and she sued them for equal pay too. She volunteered as an attorney for the New Jersey American Civil Liberties Union, represented custodians in a class action suit, and later, when the Free Speech Movement on campuses in the 1960s began to warm up, she was already red hot and ready to go.The best parts of Carmon’s memoir are the primary documents, because we get to see RBG’s own words. Ginsburg was made a federal appeals judge by President Jimmy Carter and moved to fill a vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court by President Bill Clinton. She’s issued a number of tremendously eloquent decisions, and has chosen to read her dissent aloud, a thing not usually done, a record-breaking five times at the time this book was written. The lacy-looking necklace that fans out on all sides of her neck is her dissent collar, and so those that hear the Court deliver its decision can see exactly where Justice Ginsberg stands as soon as they see what she is wearing. At times such as these, in which a woman in Indiana was recently sentenced to 20 years in prison for having an abortion [reference mine], it gives women hope to know that there is a fighter on the Supreme Court who’s looking out for our interests. It doesn’t mean that women can step away from this political battle, but it’s a thing that encourages us and lends us fortitude. In January, it is rumored that Ginsberg will release her own memoir, one that relies heavily on her court decisions. Likely this will be an even better memoir than this one. For now though, this uplifting, funny, well-documented memoir is as good as it gets. Go get it.

Great so far, but DO NOT get the Kindle version. There are a lot of interesting pictures/graphics that contribute to the book and you will be very very sad to have to look at them on a Kindle screen - the adaptation is terrible. At least now, its more expensive than the hardcover version, which is ridiculous. I flipped through the actual book and it is laid out well and aesthetically pleasing... the Kindle version is not that at all. I'm really disappointed.

I don't think someone from my generation would have the imagination to design a book this way, or to include a photo feature about a Supreme Court Justice's "swag." But fundamentally this is a wonderful book about the difference an individual can make. The book's breezy style has a deeper and more serious significance, as well.I was touched by many things in this book, not only the courage of Justice Ginsburg's opinions, or the loving handwritten note from her dying husband, but even by the photos illustrating her close friendship with Justice Scalia, one of her ideological opposites - it's rare to see such a mensh in these times. The format is terrifically creative for this sort of subject: the NY Times reviewer aptly described it as being "as if a scrapbook and the Talmud decided to have a baby." The latter comes in especially for the way the book's margins are used for commenting on everything -- not just for the obvious connections to a Justice who is Jewish. (Apropos of that, though, one thing did puzzle me: the recipe for pork in milk at the back. Breaking two of the Jewish religion's food taboos at once -- isn't that a little gangsta? Was that the idea, or is the whole thing a joke? And actually, one other thing: the publisher's subject classification on the back cover is "Fiction." Aside from the recipe, I hope not.)I now live in Japan and teach comparative constitutional law there. Pretty much no one, including most law professors, can name the justices of the Japan Supreme Court, who are chosen for their anonymity, their conformity to a certain social background, and their timidity of thought. And throughout its nearly 70-year existence, the JSC has always upheld laws and regulations that limit civil rights. One reason I got this book was to be able to show my students how completely different the relationship between a country's Supreme Court and its citizens can be. In most countries of the world, a book like this would be inconceivable. While I'm not saying that many other Justices deserve such a tribute, this book should be a great reminder for Americans how lucky you are not only to have Justice Ginsburg, but also to be capable of such affectionate engagement with your government.

I've been a huge fan of RBG and was looking forward to a thorough account and analysis of her life, career, and achievements. But this just isn't it.Sure it glosses over some major legal milestones, but it spends as much time on her workouts, wardrobe, baby pictures, etc. It contains a mere 200 sparsely printed but amply (and beautifully) illustrated pages, and really offers little other than coffee table amusement to any normal adult. I'm planning on either donating this to my son's middleschool library or gift it to a progressive minded pre-teen girl; that's the audience this book is pitched at.My fault, I guess. It's a lesson learned in online shopping; I should have gone to a physical bookstore to browse before buying.Giving 2 stars because it may be good for the right audience, i.e., inspiring pre-teens to the idea of public service.

An excellent book and very inspiring. I'm glad there is someone like her on the Supreme Court. One thing that stuck out for me was her explanation as to why she didn't retire early so that Obama could put in a good replacement for her. And the explanation was that many women have been pushed out early. And trying to push women out so they can make room for others isn't right. People were also trying to push out Breyer but RGB was the one getting most of the press for not leaving.

I've been a fan for so long but this book opened a whole new vision of the artist that I have admired for so long. It's personal, honest, with the sincerity of an old friend talking to me. It's awesome, I just couldn't stop reading. Eventhough Michael Bolton is a huge succesful artist, reading about his personal experiences, struggles and tough moments, makes him more human than ever. And putting that together with his music helped me understand him better as a human being. A very special one, with a wonderful talent, but human after all. I admire him even more for having the courage to talk about his life (the good and the bad) and all of his accomplishments in a very humble way. I hope the story of his life keeps being written with more wonderful moments and beautiful experiences to share with the world through the words that come out of his soul.

Michael adds a lot besides what one would expect in a celebrity biography, including information about the recording industry--things the average outsider never considers when they listen to or follow a recording artist. There's a lot of angst for the performer regardless of how much they enjoy what they do. Especially interesting was how Michael defaulted into his career--it's his life's passion but his early life pretty much dictated his choices in later life. He's lucky but so are his fans--read the book and you'll understand.

Having been a Michael Bolton fan for years, I thought I knew just about everything relating to "The Maestro" but I didn't!!! His soulful book is truly a revelation about the man and his music, his dedication, his passion and his long road to success. His style is delightfully relaxed and lay-back and his humor is delicious. It was filled with anecdotes and "true confessions" as well as some remarkable and insightful wisdom. I highly recommend it.

I think I really wanted to know all about Michael Bolton as a person. He didn't expose much about himself as a person. The book was uninteresting and if all a person wants to know is his experiences as a song writer and musician, then this is your kind of book. I just felt it was boring and couldn't wait for it to be OVER!

I am a huge fan of Michael's music, huge fan. I have his cds and DVDs and decided to purchase this book to learn more about the kind of person he is. Well, I truly enjoyed the first part and I was very impressed with the description of what he went through in order to become successful. Some of the things I didn't care for, like his use of drugs and leaving school so early in life, but I still find him to be extremely talented. However, I should have stopped when I read that he finally made it. That part when he describes being able to take his girls to the mall and provide for his family. The reason why is that after that point, it was disappointing to me to know that he divorced the wife that was there for him when times were rough, the one who worked hard so he could go after his dreams. It was disappointing that he barely acknowledged that and went on to dedicate an entire chapter of the book to Nicolete. Also, all the talking about opera and golf were immensely boring to me. I still like his music though but too bad I allowed my personal beliefs interfere with my reading.

This was a very interesting read... I never knew Michael had such a tough start is his singing carrier... He has such a beautiful voice that I'm glad he went away from R+Roll. I hope to some day see him in person at a concert somewhere in NH...I love that his youngest daughter is named Taryn... I have a granddaughter named Taryn...

Have been a fan for over two decades now so I found reading about his life to be quite interesting. Having seen him in concert numerous times and even attending a Bolton Bombers softball game, I enjoyed hearing about his background and trials. It was refreshing to hear it directly from him, not from news articles and second hand information. Anyone wanting to make it in the music business might find it worth the read as well.

I purchased this book because I have always liked the idea of Michael Bolton besides his music. The book is an exact replica of what you see on television and in concerts. He speaks directlyfrom his heart to yours and mine. This is not a tell all book but rather a history of how he gotto be who he is now.

Disappointed in this guidebook. I have dozens of guidebooks that I have purchased to plan trips and have never found a book to be as useless as this one. I learned more about this city in the minutes I spent scanning another book at a bookstore than I did reading this one cover to cover.

This book was so useless, I stole someone else's review comments: "Disappointed in this guidebook. I have dozens of guidebooks that I have purchased to plan trips and have never found a book to be as useless as this one."

I'm picky when it comes to city guides. I occasionally pick up one at a book kiosk at the airport, flip through it and while I'll sometimes find them informative, they frequently feel like someone "from away" has swooped into town, done mega research, and penned a 36-hour guide. Not so with Pamela McNaughtan's Urban Guide to Quebec City. The tips, the tone, the insider content -- you know it's written by someone who's planted herself in that city and knows "the people in her neighbourhood" -- as well as the places, the eateries, the best times (and ways) to check out historic sites and museums. The tips on 'what to do' are clearly crafted by someone who's visited multiple times and at different times of day. In short: by someone who lives there. And the foodie tips? Obviously, they come straight from the gut – not from Google.I've spent chunks of time in Quebec City. My longest stay of 6 weeks (for a French immersion program some years ago) gave me what I thought was a good insider take on one of the oldest cities in North America. Or so I thought. Pamela McNaughtan's book has provided entire layers of Quebec City that I somehow missed. Urban Guides: Quebec City has enticed me to go back again.

What a great guide to the city. With few options in English for travelers visiting the city, this is a god-send for independent travelers. It has a true local's slant to the information, sharing the stories of the people behind the recommendations as well, which I love. I have not yet visited the city, but I feel completely prepared now.Plus, in addition to being useful, it's gorgeous too! It's a pleasure to dig through the various sections and plan my trip to Quebec City.

Fantastic guide which goes in much more depth than most. You can clearly tell this was written by an insider with rich knowledge of the city. Highly recommended for those looking to explore this fascinating city!

Great little guide to Quebec City, which makes us even more excited for a visit. Loved the interviews with different city residents involved in hospitality, and learning the story behind different places. Packed with great suggestions for spots to eat and drink, and really got a feel for the city.

Bullies: How the Left's Culture of Fear and Intimidation Silences Americans, by Ben Shapiro

Review

"Ben Shapiro is a warrior for conservatism, against those who use fear and intimidation to stifle honest debate. I’ve never known him to back down from a fight and, in Bullies, he shows us all exactly why that fight is necessary.” (Glenn Beck, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Cowards) “Ben Shapiro has a great new book out called “Bullies: How the Left’s Culture of Fear and Intimidation Silences America.” Ben’s premise about the left’s silencing tactics is absolutely correct. Obviously I’ve witnessed the left’s bullying behavior up close and personal when it’s been directed at those so close to me…Please read Ben’s book and consider his advice about how we must stand up and push back twice as hard against this bullying. We must not allow ourselves to be frightened into silence.” (Sarah Palin) "In Bullies, Ben Shapiro shows once and for all that the left is the single greatest source of bullying in modern American life. Their goal: to shut down the political debate in the name of political correctness. Don't let them shut you up -- read Bullies, and learn how to fight back!" (Sean Hannity, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Conservative Victory) "Bullies is a rousing manifesto against liberal thuggery. Meticulously documented and deeply personal, this book will infuriate AND inspire you. Shapiro exposes all the Left's menaces...infused with the indomitable spirit of his friend and mentor Andrew Breitbart, Shapiro issues a passionate call to arms." (Michele Malkin, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Culture of Corruption) "Bullies will shock you with its point-by-point, fiery deconstruction of the left's strong-arm strategy for silencing conservatives. You don't know the left until you've read Bullies. And you won't be able to beat them unless you do." (David Limbaugh, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Great Destroyer) "Irresistibly readable... Ben Shapiro has nailed the left right where it lives." (David Horowitz, New York Times bestselling author of Radicals)

I was about halfway through it when he signed it for me and reading this book is like entering the mind of Ben Shapiro. You are able to think like him, understand things the way he does, and you start to become almost as smart and sharp as him. Heck, the reason I have been arguing on Facebook more is because of how smart this book is making me and the way it is making me argue better. However, for all of the wonderful things associated with this book, it isn’t without flaws. When I stopped being a libertarian, one of the reasons was because I realized that a lot of libertarian sources I listen to are biased (Ron Paul Liberty Report, Julie Borowski, various libertarian websites, CATO, Reason, etc.) and Shapiro is no different. There are many claims in this book that are exaggerated (e.g the claim that liberals are not patriotic). There are many liberals and lefties I know that are very patriotic and love this country. The section on “anti-semitic bullies” was a section that I disagreed with wholeheartedly. All in all, this is an excellent book that I still cannot recommend enough- 9.3/10

I hate the fact that I have to give this book a 2 star review because I am a huge fan of Ben Shapiro, but this book really didn't seem totally objective. Everything has a bias, granted, if you set out to find a book, movie,TV show, exc that doesn't have any bias, your search will endless. That being said, this book seems to cherry pick things and not give great supporting detail to the arguments being made (not all of them, but a fair amount, Chapter 6 "green bullies" is a good example of that). One chapter in particular, chapter 7, "Secular Bullies" is essentially an argument of "secularists are all anti-religious people who couldn't care less about good god fearing people" when in actuality people who support secularism (Atheists & religious folks) simply understand that scientific (and in some cases political) ideas are best not predicated on divine reasoning. It's perfectly fine to disagree with that, however Shapiro seems to think of it with an "us vs them" mentality. This book, and what I thought of it has not made me like Ben any less, I want to make that clear. However this is certainly not his best work. With this review in mind, I would like to point out that chapter 2 "Anti-patriotic bullies" and chapter 3 "race bullies" are absolutely amazing. It is only in the latter half of the book that it really starts going down hill.

Really good book. Great insight. Very articulate and great arguments made, backed by facts.

Shapiro goes into great detail to expose the lies and misinformation that is being perpetrated by the American left. The beginning of the book helps to outline the history of this behavior with examples, and in what areas of American society this toxic behavior is manifesting. Shapiro does a great job outlining what is happening and how to stop it: speak up and don't remain silent in the face of the left's intimidation tactics(punch back). I didn't like that the book appears to be very much in the moment. It examines past history of the left's behavior, but doesn't account for the possibility of major conservative victories or fighting back that happened after the fact(ex. Trump). The book is a great (recent)history lesson about the left and how their fear tactics grip different areas of American culture. With great examples and well-placed points exposing the left's idiocy, the only real downsides of the novel fail to account for are giving numerous examples of how the average American can 'punch back', which I think would have really made the book even that much better.

I purchased this book after following Ben Shapiro on Twitter for a while. As a life long democrat and mostly liberal until about 4 years ago, I have felt isolated and alone in my quest to understand why identity politics and theories that support them crush all other free though. I found it extremely disheartening to the point of being anxious and depressed. Why are these people that I have kumbaya's with forever going off the deep end and willing to group think me into silence for really simple deviations and questions. It is a serious societal concern that I believe is on the verge of "cannibalizing itself" as many predict. But in the mean time I am learning to speak my truth. I believe in people as individuals. And come from a place of true love for humanity and practicality. I will no longer be silenced. I haven't called myself a conservative yet, but I consider rational conservative to be kinfolk. And even the irrational ones are generally cool to debate without accusing you of being cruel and racist. Then there is the teensy alt-right who get all the courage, it is a testemant to the left that they want to pin the disgraceful actions and words of a few on all conservatives. Thanks Ben and other rational conservatives! You have really given me hope!
