About the Author

Karen R. Zittleman came to American University as a graduate student, worked with Dr. Sadker on gender equity research, then began researching teacher education issues, and now has graduated to co-author of this text. Karen brings both energy and insights to this textbook. Karen attended the University of Wisconsin for her bachelor’s degree, and American University for her master’s and doctorate. She teaches at American University’s School of Education, and has been a virtual teacher for several courses offered online through the Women’s Educational Equity Act. Her articles about gender, Title IX, and teacher education appear in the Journal of Teacher Education, Educational Leadership, Phi Delta Kappan, Principal and other professional journals. She is a contributing author to Teaching and Gender Equity: Foundations, Skills, Methods and Strategies (Lawrence Erlbaum publishers), and has created several equity websites. Karen has also authored Making Public Schools Great for Every Girl and Boy, an instructional guide on promoting equity in math and science instruction (National Educational Association), and educational film guides for A Hero for Daisy and Apple Pie: Raising Champions. She is project manager for Myra Sadker Advocates. Karen’s research interests have focused on educational equity, foundations of education, teacher preparation, and spirituality in education.

This book is so far left wing liberalism I can hardly stomach it. This book says greeting the students as “boys and girls” can be damaging to place them in a specific category. I don’t believe this there are some people who value manners. I along with many of my Asian family members agree. We are very respectful and place a high emphasis on respectfulness. The generalizations made about Latino Americans is highly offense to myself and my Latino fiancée.The information in this book could be useful but even in chapter two the begining is presented as fact when it is not even supported by today’s standards.As a mixed race family this book is way off base in a lot of ways. There are some great suggestions but don’t buy into this hate speech written in this book. Do not believe all the information in this book.

The right-wingers are right to criticize this book. But, just like they do with Obama, they're doing it for the wrong reasons.The authors aren't racist because they bring up the issue of white privilege. If you really think our education system is a Marxist plot to enslave white people you should stop spending your days oiling your guns in your mom's basement and get out to have a talk with your kid's teachers.The more dangerous bias in this book is something that most commentators don't mention, maybe because they support it. These authors are slavish, drooling cheerleaders for privatizing our public education system.In Chapter 5 they let a rain of wet kisses fall all over groups like the Gates Foundation that are spearheading this privatization effort. They get all googly when they mention "making New Orleans a leading laboratory for charter school experiments." And you can almost hear their verbal ejaculation as they get all moist writing about Edison Schools or the fact that "Sylvan is piloting their centers at Wal-Mart so students can be tutored while parents cruise the aisles."Charter schools are a failure. You can either be for them, or for public education, but not both. As a manual that is supposed to train people to be teachers, this book completely glosses over the many flaws of charter schools.Almost 30 school districts have cancelled their contracts with Edison Schools because they were so poorly run. Most of these happened before the book was published in 2010, but the book makes no mention of this. Charter schools are used mainly to crush the power of teacher's unions, but any union perspective isn't even mentioned in this chapter. The authors only tack on brief sentences at the end of sections saying things like "some Edison employees reported that the company was hiding it's problems from the public" (a huge understatement) so they can weakly claim that they've addressed these criticisms.In the ideal future that the authors seem to be imagining unlicensed paraprofessionals would be doing the teaching in charter schools for wages just slightly higher than para wages. First grade teachers would just drift around a classroom not actually teaching but monitoring a room of students all glued to their computer screens where they play "educational online games." These are some of the things I've witnessed firsthand by subbing in charter schools. As bad as public schools are, at least they can be held accountable by the school board. Charter schools aren't accountable to anyone except their shareholders, and even the shareholders aren't happy with them (just look up all the shareholder lawsuits against Edison Schools). But you wouldn't get any sense of this from reading this textbook.

I bought the e-book version, and am very disappointed with the kerning (spacing) seen in the text when viewing it through the PC kindle reader. All throughout the book, there is excessive spaces added in the middle of words. Here's are some direct quotes of the text from my reader:"In this t ext""we will try mightily to include rele vant""all kinds of topics that of fer you a balanced vie w of teaching"No, those typos are not mine, and yes, that was all from the first sentence of the book. Yes, I can technically still understand what's written, but it's extremely annoying and disruptive. I will do some research into whether this is a bug on the PC version of the reader, but frankly even if there's a fix, I think 1 star is apt here. It shouldn't be a huge challenge to have an ebook not be riddled with spacing errors.

The book was packed full of interesting information and the accompanying CD- ROM was even better. Disc had case studies and tricky scenarios that cause the reader to give serious thought to possible solutions for the instructors. Also articles correspond to topics in each chapter and elaborate on themes and ideas mentioned in the textbook. In addititon, there is a website that offers even more information. The site has practice tests, definitions, and even videos that go along with the book. I have never seen a book that had a supplement that was worth the cost or effort to read as this CD-ROM was. The only problem was that it contains more information than the average person would have time to read.I purchased this book for a class, of course, and not for personal entertainment but it was still a very interesting read.

Bought it as required for my education course. I supposedly bought it used but it was in what appears to be perfect condition. I'd swear no one used it before me. The material is actually interesting and the textbook is written in such a way where it isn't a pain to read. Very useful for my course.

I got this book for one of my classes, and I got it for a great price. The book provides a lot of information about the history of teaching as well as teaching philosophies. My only gripe is that the info is a bit dry and could be more focused. I would recommend this product to others.

I bought this for my Education 420 class and I feel there was a lot to learn from this textbook. Despite being a textbook it was enjoyable to read.
