The best book ever! (and I've read over 50 books. I don't say this lightly). The first few chapters weren't as good, but later on in the book it gets really good. Whether you plan on being a counselor or not, I believe this is a good book for anyone to read because it establishes how our sufficiency in life is in Christ and we need not seek other means and methods like psychology in order to be more holy as He is holy. This book has many things to say. In addition to desiring to help others with the sins and struggles in their lives, you will walk away challenged, convicted, and eager to mortify the sin in your own flesh.

I am a Pentecostal (need I say more for my subject line comment?). Regardless, there was a lot of good information in Mr. MacArthur's book. The book was used in a college level class entitled "Pastoral Care and Counseling". I could not agree more with Dr. MacArthur's dogma about the use of Scripture in counseling. IT IS A MUST! He gives great substantiation for the use of the Bible for the "soul work" that is necessary in complete and successful counseling. I would highly recommend it for anyone interested in biblical counseling (and those that are against Bible-based counseling to consider SERIOUSLY).

I really liked the book though it was difficult to get into at first. As a mental health professional, I have a little trouble with completely dismissing any use of traditional therapies. However, I do understand the concept that the Bible is sufficient.

This was a very well written and good resource for anyone who wants to study the topic of Biblical Counseling. A must have for mature Believers, lay leaders and pastors.

Great book. Provides a distinct overview of Biblical counseling that is very easy to understand and it provides a launching point for all those seeking to be a Biblical counselor.

John MacArthur's books are always packed with great Biblical information. For the nouthetic counselor or someone taking classes to be a nouthetic counselor or for the Christian who is in the mission field, this is a great read and reference source.

Excellent resource for Biblical Counselling. Thoughtful and scholarly approach to understanding and applying biblical principles to the sorrows and suffering encountered in modern life.
