Review

A gripping, brilliantly told tale of the secret and deadly struggle between American national security and the kings of the oceans. At once thrilling and heartbreaking, this is a landmark book of deep, original reporting which could alter forever how we view our role as stewards of the seas. (Bob Woodward, author of The Price of Politics)As War of the Whales…makes convincingly clear, the connection between naval sonar and deadly mass strandings of whales is scientifically undeniable…a strong and valuable narrative. (Washington Post, 50 Notable Books 2014)Intimate and urgent storytelling....Horwitz's years of research and observation lend genuine drama to this save-the-whales tale. The author paints rich portraits of his subjects, much fuller than the rote physical descriptions and caricatures that might pass for characterization in a breezier work of nonfiction. (Chicago Tribune)A fascinating read and incredibly informative. This is a powerful book and will be of great interest to anyone concerned with marine mammal protection, the uneasy balance between the competing desires for national security and environmental protection, or the messy politics of scientific inquiry. (HOWARD ERNST, Professor of Political Science at the United States Naval Academy Navy Proceedings Magzine)Horwitz delivers a powerful, engrossing narrative that raises serious questions about the unchecked use of secrecy by the military to advance its institutional power. (Kirkus starred review Best Nonfiction Books of 2014)In this gripping detective tale, science writer Horwitz recreates a day-by-day account of the quest to find thereasons for the mass strandings; the Navy’s resistance and cover-up of theiruse of sonar in the area; and the drawn out struggles between Balcomb, Joel Reynolds, of the Natural Resources Defense Council, and the Navy. . . . Riveting. (Publishers Weekly)In a riveting and groundbreaking new book, War of the Whales, Joshua Horwitz, chronicles the true story of the 20-year battle led by scientists and environmental activists against military sonar. It reads like the best investigative journalism, with cinematic scenes of strandings and dramatic David-and-Goliath courtroom dramas as activists diligently hold the Navy accountable. A page-turning detective story, War of the Whales... chillingly tracks the US Navy’s culture of secrecy as it collides with environmental groups and grassroots’ demand for transparency. (Brenda Peterson Huffington Post)For those looking for the perfect non-fiction beach read, you couldn’t do better than War of the Whales: A True Story, Joshua Horwitz’s recounting of an attorney and marine biologist who take on the Navy and the fatal harm they are causing the ocean’s mammals. (CBS Watch! Magazine)Engaging… War of the Whales reads like a novel, but the story it tells is true…a fascinating personal tale. (Animal Welfare Institute Quarterly)From severed whale heads to top-secret Naval warfare ops, from the blue waters of the Bahamas to the inner corridors of the Pentagon, War of the Whales is a true-life detective story, military drama and legal procedural of the first order. Joshua Horwitz channels John Grisham and Jacques Cousteau in a way that will leave the reader inspired, outraged and deeply satisfied. (David Helvarg, Founding Director of Blue Frontier Campaign)

I was ready to love this book. A mass whale die-off, a whale researcher who has a hunch the Navy is to blame, secrets., conspiracy, lawsuits. And of course, the whales. What ruined the book for me was how the author insists on including pages of personal life detail on just about every person in this book, and it is loaded. Do we really care how a couple met, how many times this guy has been divorced, who used to be a hippie, who went to school where? The story is about the whales and finding out whether navy testing violates laws and kills the animals, and then proving it.It could have been a real page-turner but for me it was a page-scanner as I kept skimming ahead to get to the good stuff. Very disappointing.

In the past several months I've run into a spate of hyped non-fiction works that turned out to be clunkers in terms of reporting failings or filler, and this stands in a separate class. The author's well of primary research material is enormous, and I'm in awe of his ability to process what appear to be thousands upon thousands of pages of academic research and Office of Naval Research records. Assembling a timeline alone must have taken at least a year. Certainly, some of the detail strays deep into weeds territory and may be a turn-off to casual readers. I encourage them to stick with it, if only for a glimpse into how the naval office operates. As for the story, it's heartbreaking and haunting. I had no idea that whales' anatomy is so very complex, and draws so much university-level interest. I also got a lesson on sound, how it travels and why. I have no doubt that these animals suffered immensely, and with them the humans that advocated for them. It's been several months since I finished "Whales," and just about every day since I've been struck by some aspect of it. "War of the Whales" is not an easy read, or a light or entertaining one. But it's a tale that needed to be told, and demands to be read.

Quite good. Going up against the Navy is a lot like pushing a large, heavy, flat rock up a very steep hill; but there are persistent and tireless activists working to maintain the health of the oceans and sea life. I am constantly amazed at what mankind can do with careless and callous disregard for the environment or other species. One saying in the book says it all "a deaf whale is a dead whale". By the end of the book you recognize that it's not just the Navy and it's not just the US. Exxon Mobile uses powerful sonar to map the ocean and the impacts on the marine mammals is mass inter-species stranding. This is a pretty powerful story that might cause a little bit of nausea once we start realizing the real damage being done in the name of national security as a catch all to authorize inflicting mortal injury on a large number of species. Yes the Navy has to test new technologies and train, but there has to be consideration for the damage knowingly (and not all together necessary) inflicted. After reading this book, I don't know where that line is, but I do know that an unfettered authority to do whatever they deem necessary is not good. There are no check and balances. Invoke national security in a post-911 world and suddenly everything can be justified. My quibbles with the book are minor (but enough to bring it down from its 5 star trajectory). There is a lot of personal stuff about a some folks that is just misplaced. To say that their work took a major toll on their personal lives would have been enough. No need to go into their multiple failed marriages and childhoods. That may have been a clumsy attempt to lure readers. Not necessary, it's a fascinating story in it's own right. Secondly, the ending was anticlimactic. Three hundred pages of great build up, heroic efforts, honorable people, hardworking knowledgeable experts on both sides of the argument and the ending is down right depressing. So frustrating.Overall this was fascinating and it never dragged. This is the best kind of book. I came away from it much smarter and more informed than when I started and I never noticed I was learning. Highly recommended.

This is a pretty incredible book in my opinion. It is a true account of a group of whales that stranded themselves in the Bahamas in 2000. Most died. A couple were saved for autopsy. The book then tracks the prior 30-40 years of 'scientific research' regarding whales and dolphins and sonar by the Navy and the private sector. This 'research' thus leads up to the stranding event. If you consider yourself to be an environmentalist, pro-whale, ocean loving person who has never really known how it all got to the point we are at now (like me), you should read this. One amazing fact I had never heard before was that the Navy knew about global warming in the late 70's! After reading this book I have a whole new understanding, respect and love for NRDC, Greenpeace and several other groups and individuals than I ever have. This is a true story of the 'good guys' going up against the 'bad guys' and one guy who realizes he cannot stay in the middle

This is an engrossing well-written story about the heroic efforts of a number of people, especially Joel Reynolds and Ken Balcomb, to protect whales and dolphins from the effects of U S Navy sonar testing. The physiology and biology of these creatures make them fatally vulnerable to high energy sonar, such as the frequencies used to detect submarines. But I gave to confess, the story makes me wonder how many cetaceans are killed far at sea by sonar and their bodies never found by humans, and also how the anti-submarine technology and practices of other countries are affecting these creatures.Horowitz does a super job of explaining sonar technology and whale biology, the Byzantine legal system, while at the same time showing the personalities and incidents in the story. He (in my opinion) portrayed the different people in an objective light. But, perhaps not all of them have the whales' well-being as their primary objective.
